The Story Behind Dolores Umbridge and What Happened

We all have heard the tale of Dolores Umbridge.

The woman of ruthless power.

This is the story of a well-known witch: Dolores Umbridge. You may recognize the name from her infamous headmaster story, or from her being compared to Voldemort himself.

Dolores Umbridge, at the age of 17, just after finishing Hogwarts, started her political career as an intern in the Improper Use of Magic Office at the Ministry of Magic. Before reaching age 30, she became the Head of the Office, due to her ruthless tactics and tyrannical leadership under her sweet attitude, which also involved taking credit for other people’s work.

She then served as Senior Undersecretary to the Minister for Magic under many Ministers, including Cornelius Fudge, Rufus Scrimgeour, and Pius Thicknesse. However, in 1995, the Ministry sent her back to Hogwarts to teach as the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor by order of the Ministry of Magic, under the terms of Educational Decree Number Twenty-Two, without Dumbledore’s consent. Her placement was to limit the learning of dangerous magic and allow the Ministry to monitor the activities at Hogwarts.

While Umbridge was a professor, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger started a secret “club” called Dumbledore’s Army. Now, this was a place where Harry taught others proper Defence Against The Dark Arts. The meetings were held in the Room of Requirement, to keep it secret. The class progressed at a fair rate, learning the Impediment Jinx, Reductor Curse, Stunning Spell, and various other hexes and jinxes.

Shortly before Easter, one D.A. member, Marietta Edgecombe, betrayed them to Umbridge. She was a reluctant member of the D.A., having been brought to the meetings by her friend, Cho Chang. Her mother worked in the Floo Network Office and was helping Umbridge to monitor the Floo Network at Hogwarts. Afraid that her mother’s job was in jeopardy, and not convinced by Harry’s interview in The Quibbler at the time, she revealed the location of the D.A.’s meetings to Umbridge. After Umbridge was informed, she assembled a group of Slytherin students to shut down the club. During a confrontation with Fudge and Umbridge, Albus Dumbledore took full responsibility for the creation of Dumbledore’s Army, to shield Harry and the students from the Ministry’s wrath. Albus Dumbledore was then to be sent to Azkaban. However, Dumbledore escaped with help from his phoenix, Fawkes, resulting in Umbridge automatically becoming the Headmistress of Hogwarts, though very few considered her position legitimate.

Members of the D.A., especially Fred and George Weasley, rebelled against the new authority at the school. During that year’s O.W.L.s, the twins flew around the room on their brooms, setting off fireworks and throwing papers into the air as a distraction for Harry to get into Umbridge’s office. All the students cheered at the rebellion, while Umbridge was in shock. The twins created an enchanted firework that would create a fire-breathing dragon when activated—and they activated it! The dragon ran for Umbridge, and Umbridge ran out of the school in fear.

Soon afterward, Umbridge caught Harry trying to use the Floo Network in her office while trying to contact Sirius, and he and his friends and fellow D.A. members Hermione Granger, Ron and Ginny Weasley, Neville Longbottom, and Luna Lovegood were held in her office by Inquisitorial Squad members. Umbridge then claimed that the illegal Cruciatus Curse might “loosen [his] tongue”. Hermione, much in shock, protested against it, but Umbridge simply brushed her off and noted that what “Cornelius doesn’t know, cannot hurt him.” Desperate, Hermione tricked Umbridge into following her and Harry into the Forbidden Forest in search of an alleged “secret weapon” of the Order of the Phoenix. There, Umbridge was confronted by a herd of centaurs whom she shamelessly insulted multiple times. She attacked one of the centaurs, causing them to become defensive and start chasing her. Remarkably, she survived. However, her wand was snapped in half by one of the centaurs.

Umbridge was then told by the minister to return back to her former position as Senior Undersecretary, and Dumbledore was once more the Headmaster of Hogwarts. The last time she was seen after this incident was at Albus Dumbledore’s funeral at Hogwarts in the sitting of 1997, though she did not speak and was startled by the sight of Firenze.

Now, we exactly don’t know where she is today, due to a number of rumors her story has.

The most reliable theory, which was revealed by an anonymous employee of the Ministry of Magic in 2014, states “Umbridge worked at the ministry until her death. Her behavior remained just as dreadful as before the centaur incident.” The employee made the theory will remain anonymous, as it is labeled as Ministry Private.

There are still out other theories that float around about her demise, but we may never know the truth.
