When did the idea come about? Who were the first people on the cards? Why are they so popular? How fast are they being updated? All these questions will be answered today!
If you didn’t already know, chocolate frog cards come with chocolate frogs! I promise you these aren’t real frogs, so don’t get your hair in a knot because no frog eating is happening here. Chocolate frogs came around in the early 1900’s, but the cards weren’t introduced until 1926. That’s almost 100 years ago, and still to this day the cards are as exciting as they were back then.
Although the first exact person on a chocolate frog card was not documented, we can assume it was one of these three people:
Merlin (#1 Bronze): Merlin is the most famous wizard of all time. Known as King Arthur’s wizard, and sitting upon his court, Merlin has had numerous stories told about him throughout many generations. Both Muggles, witches, and wizards know of him.
Fulbert the Fearful (#1 Famous Wizards Cards): Fulbert the Fearful is famous for being so cowardly, he never left his house—much like many people nowadays! He died when a defensive charm backfired and caused his roof to collapse on top of him.
Beatrix Bloxom (#1 Famous Witches Cards): Beatrix Bloxom was the author of Toadstool Tales, a book that was ultimately banned because it caused nausea and vomiting. Whether that was a curse on the book or the content, we shall never know.
Unfortunately, we do not have access to #1 Gold or #1 Silver, however, these wizards and witches are most likely a few of the first to appear between 1926 and 1936.
Now, moving on to the popularity and time between updates! Chocolate frog cards are one of—if not the most—popular collectable trading items in the magical world. There are over 101 different cards to collect, and they might be worth thousands of galleons soon as the newer cards start to appear! Of course, the Daily Prophet has been documenting the updates to chocolate frog cards since December 1926 and they most certainly will continue. (However, we will also be joining in with them!!) Chocolate frog cards are something that everyone loves —whether it’s the chocolate or the collecting. However, you may see some people start to wither a little when it comes to collecting, especially those a lot older than yourself. Chocolate frog card collecting is a tiring, yet fun, process that requires you to eat ungodly amounts of chocolate frogs—or have them hop away—and this is clearly not a healthy sport. This is one of the many reasons why you often find the younger generation participating with collecting and trading, rather than your parents.
The updates for chocolate frog cards happen whenever a witch or wizard does something significant. For example, after the battle of Hogwarts, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ronald Weasley all got a chocolate frog card, with Harry’s being the rarest. The most recent update is, of course, the new professors in Hogwarts, but these are not as hard to find as Merlin or Albus Dumbledore.
Chocolate frog cards are both a blessing and a curse. Getting too caught up in the collecting might end badly for you, or it might lead to you being one of the richest wizards in the world! Don’t eat too much chocolate, and happy collecting!!
